Books.
I was thinking about the Hp books, which led me to thinking about my other favorite books. My favorite books ever, are The Song of Ice and Fire series(A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, and the next is about to come out this month) by George R. R. Martin. I think that these are the best books ever. What about everyone else?

I'm not normally a huge fantasy fan. I think I read the default fantasy books that are required by some weird cosmic law (LOtR, His Dark Materials, Narnia, etc.). My favourite authors are Tom Robbins and Fydor Dostoyevsky. Oh, and James Joyce. I'm not an English major, nope.

Actually, HP is the only fantasy book I really love with the exception of Ella Enchanted and Wicked (if you consider that fantasy). I love Gone With the Wind, Dracula, Sloppy Firsts, Second Helpings, Catcher in the Rye, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Lovely Bones, Bridget Jones's Diary, The Great Gatsby, The Hours, Virgin Suicides, anything by Chuck Palahniuk...and the list goes on and on and on. I'm an avid reader so I have this huge range of books. I love chicklit like Bridget Jones's Diary and the Shopaholic series. I love classics like Gone with the Wind and Jane Erye...love Jane Austen. I like Stephen King and Robin McKinley, loved the LOTR trilogy. HP, obviously. Um...yeah. I'll read pretty much anything, name me a title or author and if I haven't read it yet, I'll pick it up on my next library visit. XD

[identity profile] sparklytiara.livejournal.com on August 6th, 2004 09:41 pm (UTC)
It's definitely a guilty pleasure, I always feel as though I should be reading something more...hmm, enriching? But that never stops me. XD

I tell myself that it's enriching for the soul, that stops my guilt! :-D

I usually pass it off as "beach reading". Nevermind I never go to the beach. xP

I don't really read any fantasy other than HP and The Hobbit. Some of my favorites are Second Helpings, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Just a Geek, and Dancing Barefoot.

I'm a fan of Anne Rice, Jane Austen, and Marion Zimmer Bradley's Avalon series. Gone With The Wind, Lord of The Rings, The Mists of Avalon, and Dracula are my favorite books. I've read each of them probably five times each.
[identity profile] noahismyidol.livejournal.com on August 6th, 2004 09:40 pm (UTC)
I never read The Mists of Avalon, but I did see the movie and it was quite good(gotta love Michael Vartan!), it makes me want to read the book.
[identity profile] morriganangelus.livejournal.com on August 6th, 2004 09:44 pm (UTC)
Oh do! The book is so much better than the movie. :-) I saw the movie before I read the book too, and was very surprised by the differences. The book is definately better. :-)
[identity profile] angeleyesjg24.livejournal.com on August 6th, 2004 09:49 pm (UTC)
Well, my all time favorite fantasy book is the Lord of the Rings. It has a story for everyone- action, compasssion, friendship, evil, romance (Eowyn and Faramir is one of the sweetest stories in the book), loss, victory, comming-of-age, fighting prejudice, overcomming differences.....I really could ramble on for a long time about that book. I think a vast majority of HP fan's tend to like LotR. They have similar themes to them.

I am a huge Jane Austen fan. Pride and Prejudice is without doubt one of the most incredible books I've ever read. Mr. Darcy has got to be one of the top five characters ever written. He is so complex- one of the few characters who can truly enrapture someone.

Also fond of: House of the Spirits, Phantom of the Opera, Jane Eyre, A Tale of Two Cities, Bridget Jones's Diary, anything related to King Arthur, Shakespeare etc. I read a lot of classic litertature. It's so much more rich to me than a lot of modern lit.

*nods* Lord of the Rings. Lord of the Rings. Yes, good LOTR *nods*

I LOVE anything related to King Arthur, it's one of my obsessions.
[identity profile] sirenoftitan619.livejournal.com on August 6th, 2004 11:47 pm (UTC)
Oh...that Mr. Darcy. I definitely have to agree with you about him being one of the top characters ever written. He's certainly at the top of my list at any rate. I've been enamored with him since I first read Pride and Prejudice in seventh grade.

I'm a huge Jane Austen fan though. Always have been, always will be. I love the way she paints that style of life. No matter what, I always manage to get completely caught up in her stories.

I really love books that deal with real-life stuff that I can relate to. Like I really like The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging. They deal with stuff teenage girls have to go through, and they're really interesting!

<33 Have you read all the sequels to ATaFFS? Those are possibly the funniest books I've ever read.

The sequel to Traveling Pants was good, too.

The Lord of the Rings owns me. J.R.R. Tolkien should be worshipped by all. I also love every Nicholas Sparks book, even though they make me cry like my life is coming to an end. White Oleander by Janet Fitch is one of my favorite books of all time, and I recommend it to everybody. Sarah Dessen's books are really great, and my favorites are Dreamland and This Lullaby. Other favorites: What Dreams May Come by Richard Matheson. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. Suzanne's Diary For Nicholas by James Patterson. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. The Song Reader by Lisa Tucker. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. About a billion more.

White Oleander is such a great book. I'd also recommend it to anyone. And, of Sarah Dessen's books I've read Keeping the Moon and The Truth About Forever (which I'm currently re-reading). Very good books.

It is! Whenever anybody asks for book recommendations, "OMG read White Oleander!!" It's like poetry, I love it.
Oooh, I haven't read The Truth About Forever...I'll have to get it. I have read Keeping the Moon though. You should definitely read Dreamland and This Lullaby...they're fantastic.

[identity profile] pumpkins-n-pups.livejournal.com on August 6th, 2004 11:36 pm (UTC)
Yes, definitely read The Truth About Forever. I thought Keeping the Moon was fantastic, but this one's much better, in my opinion. I definitely plan on getting her other books, too. I just bought these two last week, and I plan on getting more of hers as soon as I get the money.

The Phantom by Susan Kay is an absolute FABULOUS story of the entire life of the Phantom of the Opera. I've read it three times already and plan to read it many more.

Other good ones are Catcher In the Rye & Lord of the Flies.

Having read a ridiculous amount of books, it's impossible to remember all of the ones that I absolutely loved. I suppose my favorite authors are Kurt Vonnegut, Jane Austen, C.S. Lewis, and Chuck Palahniuk. But my favorite books are Pride and Prejudice(Austen), Slaughterhouse 5 (Vonnegut), The Bell Jar (Sylvia Plath), Catch-22 (Joseph Heller), This Side of Paradise (F. Scott Fitzgerald), all of the Jasper Fforde books (The Eyre Affair/Lost in a Good Book/The Well of Lost Plots), Silence of the Lambs (Thomas Harrison), LotR, Phantom of the Opera (Gaston Leroux), Jane Eyre (Bronte), The Princess Bride (William Goldman), Confederacy of Dunces (John Kennedy Toole), and the Anne of Green Gables books.

Honestly, I'll read almost anything you put in front of me. I'm also a HUGE stickler for non-fiction books, and especially love books on anthropology, religion, mythology, and history. But I suppose those are in a completely different class altogether.

Also still have a secret soft spot for the kids books, especially the Roald Dahl and Bruce Coville books. Oooh...and the Dealing With Dragons series by Patricia Wrede. I had to replace the first book because I broke it in half after reading it too many times.

It's no wonder that the library always appealed to me more than the toy store...

Favorite books? Now we're talking. :)

Aside from the HP series, which is absolutely wonderful...Wicked is my absolute favorite book. It probably has something to do with my very real love for all things Wizard of Oz and I was completely intrigued by the idea of knowing the life story of one of the characters that very little is known about (in this case, the story is centered around the life of the Wicked Witch of the West).

And, ofcourse, there is Tolkien. Tolkien is my world. I read his work, I study his work, I read and study about him...everything about him and the books he wrote just amazes me to no end. Return of the King would have to be my second favorite book ever. I also rather enjoy the The History of Middle-earth series, especially The Lays of Beleriand. He devoted a great part of his life to creating what he did and I think he, himself, and his work are absolutely brilliant.

Other than that, I have tons of books I love, too many to list. I doubt that there is a book out there that I would dislike, save maybe those pesky college textbooks. Those are a pain at times. :) Given the choice, I would rather read than do anything else.

All Dan Brown books because he is just awesome. "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden, "About a Boy" & "High Fidelity" by Nick Hornby, Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella, and possibly others. I'm pretty indecisive and I just bought 3 more books I haven't read yet.
