Fandom Comparisons
I once saw a site that compared various characters of Sailormoon to the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Therefore, I'm going to start a game here. Compare the characters of Harry Potter to some fandom.

I'll start off with Buffy the Vampire Slayer vs. Harry Potter
(Some are a bit of a stretch, but I did what I could)

Harry Potter Character

=

BtVS Character

Because...

Harry Potter

Buffy Summers

They are the the chosen ones that have to fight the big bad, and they aren't particularly thrilled about being chosen, Buffy just looks better doing it

Ron Weasley

Xander Harris

The 'zeppos' of their respective groups. On the outside, they don't always appear to be very helpful, but they're both the hearts of their groups, the ones who are ready and willing with sarcasm and funny quips to boost morale and both very loyal to their friends

Hermione Granger

Willow Rosenberg

The ultra-brainy sidekicks who are able to lend a hand when the situation calls for logic, reasoning, or advanced technology/magic

Albus Dumbledore

Rupert Giles

The ones who watch over the others (especially the chosen ones), guiding them with their experience and wisdom, both have become very emotionally involved with their charges, taking on a sort of parental love for them

Draco Malfoy

Anya 'Jenkins'

They both have a deep-rooted love of money. Draco's a spiteful, vengeful little boy, and Anyanka was once a vengeance demon.

Ginny Weasley

Tara Maclay

Both appear to be the quiet, quirky ones at first, but develop stronger personalities later. Both had very traumatizing run ins with the 'big bads'

Cho Chang

Riley Finn

A passing romance for both heroes. Both characters go off the deep end, and the 'relationships' are broken off.

Sirius Black

Angel

Both very mopey, sullen characters, our heroes blame themselves for the deaths of these two

Lucius Malfoy

Spike

Both very two-faced characters, with a very unhealthy obsession for the heroes. Both good at hiding their true nature, when needed. The big difference between the two is Spike's redemption

Voldemort

Glorificus (Glory)

A bit psycho, and appears to be pretty undefeatable. Both very power hungry with a huge god complex.

Feel free to add or modify opinions on the Buffy characters, or do your own fandom comparison. (And is someone could come up with an HP counterpart to Oz, please do, because I can't...

...Now, GO!

A popular one that is done all the time... HP vs. LOTR:

Frodo vs. Harry: Well, both are the protaganist, obviously. They seemingly inherit bad fortune; it's not Harry's fault that his parents were on Voldemort's hit list, and it's not Frodo's fault that Bilbo gave him an evil Ring. Now the bad guys want them because of someone's actions before them... how ironic. They also were very innocent in the beginning, but in the end (or, near it for HP's case), they are much more experienced and not really innocent anymore.

Gandalf vs. Dumbledore: Well, they are both wizards, obviously. They are both mentors to the protaganist, even if they can't be there all the time. They are wise and kind, yet can be very very powerful when angry.

Sauron vs. Voldemort: An obvious one. Both the main bad guys. Both started out good, and ended up evil. Both became disembodied. Both want world domination. Both mostly use minions for their evil work. And both want the protaganists dead.

Sam, Merry, and Pippin vs. Ron and Hermione: Protaganists, yet not the *main* characters. Each of them is there to support the protaganist at different times. Sam is more connected to Frodo than Merry or Pippin, but Ron and Hermione seem more or less equal connected to Harry. Both give some humor, both show some wit, and both are just great pals.

Aragorn vs. Sirius: A bit of a strange connection, but something I have always made. They both came to the protaganists a little later in their adventure (though Aragorn earlier than Sirius). Both are, in my opinion, hero-type guys, and would do anything for those they love (a bit like what Sirius said in the third movie... that he'd die for Lily and James). Oh, and they both are very dirty and filthy and bloody awesome.

Wormtongue vs. Wormtail: *snickers* Well, they both have 'worm' in their names. They both were converted by evil from the good side, though there is chance of redemption (Wormtongue somewhat redeemed himself... Wormtail may do the same). Both seem a bit weak in the inside, as if they do not have any self confidence.

More on the next post...
[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com on December 10th, 2004 08:28 pm (UTC)
Gollum vs. Snape: Well... you can't really tell if they are good or evil.

Gollum vs. Dobby: CGI goodness.

Ok, seriously...

Saruman vs. Fudge: Another connection others would not make, but I see it. They were both on the good side once, but they both turned to the bad side. Both wanted more power, more for themselves, regardless of the consequences.

Boromir vs. Snape: They have a little bit of connection. At some points, you are not sure if you can trust them. Snape is just a very complex character, and you never really know what he is thinking. The same with Boromir. Both were good, went to evil, and then went back to good. Boromir's little evil streak was for but a few minutes, but it still happened. Snape, I'm not sure how long he was on Voldemort's side, but I do believe he redeemed himself as well.

Ringwraiths vs. Dementors: Lifeless black shapes that fly (beast or not), and are as scary as hell. V. scary.

All other good guys vs. all other good guys: They are there to support the main character. Obviously.

All other bad guys vs. all other bad guys: There to kill the good guys. Whee.

All I can think of right now... get back if I think of anything else...
[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com on December 10th, 2004 08:38 pm (UTC)
Oh, non-people connections...

Rivendell vs. Imladris: A safehaven from the scary scary world. And I don't care what anyone thinks, I think Hogwarts would look great with a bunch of Elvish architecture and little birdies singing in the trees and those pretty balconies and maybe some *real* Elves...

Elves vs. House Elves: They are Elves. The *only* similarity between them.

Istari vs. Wizards: Well... there are only 5 Istari (Wizards) in LOTR, 2 we never hear about and 1 that doesn't really matter, while in HP there are wizards around the corner.

Creatures:
Shelob vs. Aragog
Watcher vs. Squid
Fell beast vs. dragon
Orcs vs. goblins
Trolls, other dragons...

Eh, can't think of anything else...
[identity profile] jupluna.livejournal.com on December 10th, 2004 08:42 pm (UTC)
Um...Oz and Lupin...perhaps a younger era Lupin though...^_^; Don't know much about the Buffy fandom...but Oz is the werewolf right? Can't remember...
[identity profile] spiritedrinoa.livejournal.com on December 11th, 2004 09:24 am (UTC)
Yes, and a friend pointed that out on my LJ post, am kicking myself for not remembering that. They're both intellectual too XD
[identity profile] jupluna.livejournal.com on December 10th, 2004 08:54 pm (UTC)
Harry Potter vs Sailor Moon (Usagi) - Neither really want the job they're in...they want to be "normal" and don't want to have to save the world but they will because their friends are in trouble.

Hermione vs Sailor Mercury (Ami) - Bookworms, very much for the rules but they usually go along with what their friends do anyway.

Ron vs Venus (Minako) - Second in comand...usually wanting more then they have but knowing less then they should about situations.
Ron vs Jupiter (Makoto) I shudder at this one because I have many of Makoto's qualities and I can't stand Ron. - Reckless, the "fists" of the group, loyal defender

Ginny vs Mars (Rei) - Firey tempers...usually the type of person that knows whats going on but doesn't want the help of others because they think they can handle it on their own...

The various Voldie forms vs the various Nega Leaders - Each form wanted a different thing...to gain strength and a body, to gain life from an object (toms book vs alien tree), and on and on

[identity profile] spiritedrinoa.livejournal.com on December 11th, 2004 09:33 am (UTC)
Wah! Don't like Ron!? *shakes head*

Haha, I should have known that you'd choose SM. ^-^

Neville = Umino - both very timid, although they TRY to be helpful (Am thinking of the whole 'Tuxedo Umino' episode with the shrimp....

Also, I think Ginny's more of a...egad, I can't remember her Japanese name, but Molly (although I shudder at Ginny/Neville for the most part), she's an outsider, regardless of how much she knows (and in manga, she does find out about Usagi's identity), or how involved she is. She's loyal, sweet, and upbeat.

Dumbledore = Luna, obviously. The one who knows for the most part what's going on, the guide and the guardian who sticks close, but makes the hero handle things on their own.

McGonagall = Artemis then, second in command. If I recall, manga Artemis is much more serious than the one in the anime, and even so, McGonagall has that affectionate, lighter side to her, even if she doesn't show it outwardly often.

Lily = Queen Serenity - Gave her life to save her child's, as well as bestowed protection on them. Both Lily and Serenity have appeared before their children before (Lily with the wand, and Serenity several times in the first few seasons.)

Your comparisons are interesting! I can only hope that Lucius doesn't go the Spike route, because I absolutely loathed the last two seasons of Buffy. They ruined the show with the whole Buffy/Spike thing. Not to mention Kennedy. SHUT UP, Kennedy!

Hmm...Harry Potter Oz....that's a tough one. I think the first instinct would be to say Lupin, because of the werewolf thing, but I don't know how alike they are. *ponders* Well, actually, that might work, because both of them are kind of laid back and cool and extremely nice, but I don't know...Oz just strikes me as a very unique person. He's probably most like Lupin, but I don't think that fits exactly.

My feeble attempts to cast Richard III and Julius Caesar with HP people (http://www.livejournal.com/users/ciara_belle/18280.html). I was planning on writing fics, but I don't know if I'll ever get around to it.
[identity profile] spiritedrinoa.livejournal.com on December 11th, 2004 09:36 am (UTC)
Haven't gotten to Kennedy yet (am only half through season 6), but I have RP'd in a Buffy RP where I was told the Kennedy was pretty accurate. If that's true, I'm going to loathe her...

I'm not fond of Spuffy (mostly because I favor Buffy/Angel (or even Buffy/Riley) and Spike/Dru. I don't mind Spike as a good guy, but Buffy-whiped Spike is just, so...not Spike :-/

Actually Oz and Lupin are a good match, because they're both very smart, got the werewolf thing, but they're both the 'gentle' werewolf (being that in human form they're some of the nicest characters in the stories), also, they 'control' their wolvishness - Oz with his Buddist tricks after leaving in season three, and Lupin with the wolfsbane.
[identity profile] ciara-belle.livejournal.com on December 11th, 2004 10:30 am (UTC)
Yeah, Season 7 is pretty bad. There were some parts of the last two seasons of Angel I wasn't too fond of either.

Non!Evil!Spike is just not right. I know there's a lot of hatred towards Riley, but I'd rather Buffy be with him than Spike. I'm a big fan of Spike/Dru too. ^_^

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I see the resemblence between Oz and Lupin.

Uhm... do you guys know that bit? I won't claim that it's mine because it's not. I stole it from somewhere and I forgot from where, thus I can't even give you a source. But I found it very funny, so I'm posting it:

I would actually say Cho Chang - Cordelia Chase (s1-s3 Cordelia)
Both popular pretty girls, both annoying and quite selfish and they both have CC initials XD

Oooh, and Sirius Black - Faith (s3), both rash, both in for adventure, both want to be friends with Harry/Buffy, both have a bad influence.

-Marije, Hufflepuff

[identity profile] cutedestruction.livejournal.com on December 12th, 2004 01:13 pm (UTC)
Cho Chang= Riley Finn? HAHAHAHAHAHA! (I hate both of them, so that works pretty well)

I think you're stretching a bit for Dumbledore-->Giles (Giles never did have all the answers...there were several times when Buffy just had to go off by herself and figure things out- he's more of a support role, like Lupin, or perhaps Hagrid). But the rest are really pretty good.

On a totally off-topic note, I've written my own Sailor Moon/Buffy analysis (I know, I'm a total geek). It addresses some things the website didn't catch onto (the "evil Slayer" additions to both plotlines, the incarnation of evil at the end of both series, etc). It was about season five when I started wondering if Joss Whedon was just watching too much Sailor Moon.
[identity profile] spiritedrinoa.livejournal.com on December 12th, 2004 01:20 pm (UTC)
Giles never did have all the answers

And neither does Dumbledore, really. Look at how he handles the situation with Harry in OotP. Had he been up front with him from the beginning, things probably wouldn't have festered the way they did, and Sirius would probably not have wound up dead if Harry had been allowed to understand what was going on better. I think people give Dumbledore TOO much credit for knowing what's going on. He's wise, yes, he does know a lot, but he doesn't have ALL the answers - if he did, Voldemort wouldn't have gotten near enough to Harry to do that spell in GoF, for one.

Giles does have a Lupin aspect as well, particularly his love of books. But as far as his role in relation to the story, it's more similar to that of Dumbledore's role of the one who watches but doesn't get as intensely involved as the others. (This is more Watcher!Giles, than Giles later on, but yes) :)

Do you have those comparisons posted somewhere? I'd be amused to see them.
[identity profile] cutedestruction.livejournal.com on December 12th, 2004 01:43 pm (UTC)
That's a good point. I can see what you're getting at there. It's been awhile since I've seen the earlier seasons, so I was thinking of Giles more as an ex-librarian, ex-watcher guy that eventually ran a magic shop. But you're right, in the first few seasons, he really was more of an authority figure.

I actually don't have it posted up anywhere (I've been writing lots of stuff in preperation for a website that hasn't quite gotten launched yet). It's not a thesis at all; its just a two-page compare/contrast. But I can e-mail it your way, if you want.
[identity profile] spiritedrinoa.livejournal.com on December 12th, 2004 08:38 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I've only seen halfway through season six, and I've seen them all within the past year, so they're all pretty fresh in the head. :)

I'd love to see it. spiritedrinoa(AT)hotmail(DOT)com
