Something I've been wondering...
Hokay, so lately I've been thinking about whether the houses lean a certain way politically, so I figure here is a good place as any to ask it. I understand that this being livejournal, the answers will probably be more skewed to the left, but I want to try anyway. If the mods don't feel this appropriate, feel free to delete.

However, I do not want a debate sparked here. If someone has a different opinion than you do, do not bash them for it. This is simply to satisfy my curiosity, so don't try to change anyone's mind.

The poll will close Sunday at 3:00 pm PST. Any votes after that will not be placed in the final charts.

The poll is now closed. Everyone after carnal_angel is not a real person, but a robot designed to click radio buttons. (Creating charts now!)

[Poll #444504]

Okay, I selected "other"...and for "please explain"...here ya go. ^_^

I'm a Libertarian, which basically means I lean toward the left on social issues ((abortion, civil liberties, separation of church and state)) but lean toward the right on financial issues ((welfare, taxes, foreign aid)).

Basically, the smaller and less intrusive the government is, the better.

I KNEW I forgot something... Sorry!

I'm kinda like that, but I'm skeptical on money (and thus, moderate on financial issues). Mainly because I don't trust the government, but I trust businesses even less.

That and hard-core Libertarians don't vote for NASA/NSF funding, and that's a big issue for me.

But I do like dividing economic and social conservatism.
[identity profile] pikacharma.livejournal.com on February 26th, 2005 05:56 am (UTC)
Oops. I guess I prob'ly should have specified that I'm a rather moderate Libertarian. The uber-extremist ones want to do stuff like get rid of public roads and schools and stuff. That's way too far, IMHO. And getting rid of NASA is terrible too. I'm all for space exploration. I just don't want the government taking my money to give it directly to other people or other countries.

My problem is I'm really too compassionate and too cynical to be truly economically conservative. Compassionate enough to want to help the unfortuante (in useful ways -- I mmay be generous, but I don't like being wasteful), cynical enough to assume that most groups won't step in to do it unless it is by the will of the members.
[identity profile] kelleypen.livejournal.com on February 26th, 2005 05:07 am (UTC)
I'm a Gryffindor--and a compassionate libertarian. Meaning I'm fiercely independent and I vote my conscience, not the party, and I never vote for anyone whose campaign is guilty of demagoguery. I'm for less government and more personal freedom, but I also believe in taking care of children and the environment and encouraging the arts. I like no world government, little tiny federal government, small sized state government, and medium local government where I can keep a close eye on things and keep my political involvement hands on. The last political quiz I took, I came out an anarchist. So, I don't know where I fit in your poll.
[identity profile] fluoridated.livejournal.com on February 26th, 2005 05:30 am (UTC)
Ooo eer...that sounds rather other to me. I dunno, I created this on a whim, and have since thought of so many ways to improve it. Sorry how nonspecific I was.
[identity profile] kelleypen.livejournal.com on February 26th, 2005 06:05 am (UTC)
Well, you could make another one for the next Hogsmeade weekend and use this one as a trial balloon. This whole political poll thing intrigued me; it was a good idea.

I also tend to go libertarian and am a Hufflepuff. I did however choose left for the whole liberal/conservative thing and when it comes to issues I tend to go somewhat liberal--not necessarily republican or democrat. Liberal does not mean democrat and conservative does not mean republican, in my eyes.

I'm an NDP/Green-voting Slytherin. No, I swear it's not an oxymoron! :p

I put that I fall far left, and I do on an American scale. There seems to be a lot of Americans in this community, so I choose that. But centre in Canada is quite a bit futher left than it is in the States. Granted, I'm pretty far left even for Canada. The NDP is too right for me, and they're our largest leftist party.

I believe in a fair bit freedom of choice, rights to safe abortion, gay marriage, etc. I also believe in big government, public health care, crown corporations, public education, and laws that restrict choices that harm your fellow citizens. I *like* taxes and despise cuts.

Thank you! I love the Arrogant Worms. I wish I could take credit for making it. It was a great idea.

Moderate Republic Ravenclaw. I differ from my party where abortion, gay rights, and separation of church and state are concerned, but I still seem to agree with them more than Dems. I will say this, though... zealots from either side scare the hell out of me. There's nothing more terrifying than someone who blindly believes whatever they're fed, and never even tries to see opposing viewpoints.

Sorry if this sounded garbled... I'm on Vicadin at the moment. (Whee!)

The only problem with this poll is that it doesn't break it down by house, which is what I think you were asking. So it should have been a poll with options House/Political Leaning.

Anyway, I'm a Ravenclaw leaning far Left.
[identity profile] pikacharma.livejournal.com on February 26th, 2005 06:35 pm (UTC)
The person who created the poll can view further information to see who voted what...so they can fairly easily get the data they were after. ^_^

True, but it does seem like a lot of extra work, and it would be cool if we could all see the contrasts within each House. It was just a thought :)
[identity profile] pikacharma.livejournal.com on February 26th, 2005 07:36 pm (UTC)
No, you're right. Only thing is, the poll would either be insanely long ((if you have to make individual answer choices for 4 Houses times 6 political leanings -- right, left, center, libertarian, authoritarian, and "Who cares\Politics sucks")), or the poll would have to be completely informal, as in "reply to this post, state your house and your political leanings".

LOL, who knows. It's an interesting concept anyways. ^_^;

Yeah, as I said before, I planned this v. poorly. Anyway, I have an excel document open right now, and before the weekend is over I'll post the charts I have. Sorry it's so inconvenient right now.
[identity profile] calico321.livejournal.com on February 26th, 2005 07:16 pm (UTC)
No worries :) It'll be interesting to see the breakdown.

I'm not sure who would consider what far left rather than left, so I chose left.

I'm a Ravenclaw, and I'm a bit torn between left and moderate, but I think I'm more left.

I'll be interested to see the results from this poll. I think we tend to assume that more young people are left/far left, but I'll bet we have a fairly strong right-leaning contingent here too.

I'm a Ravenclaw, and like many others here, I tend towards a moderate Libertarian stance. I'm fiscally conservative in the sense that I think that if I have to live on a budget and within my means, so does the government. And I think the government is far too big and far too invasive in our lives, but that's a rant best left for another day. Heh.

At the same time, I'm fairly liberal on social issues, so I've reached a compromise and I call myself a Libertarian, although I'm not a member of the Libetarian Party. :)
