A poll on diversity
Hello everyone.

I remember that at last Hogsmeade there was a poll on politic affiliation of the houses. I was inspired by that idea and thought that it might be interesting to see how diverse our community is. I've fashioned a poll to construct a profile of Hogwartsishome, as a piece of the Harry Potter fandom, to see what sort of people we attract.

The answers to the poll will not be viewable to anyone, in order to make people more comfortable with answering. Some people may not feel comfortable with others knowing personal information about themselves, so I have chosen to make it anonymous.

Please, do not comment if you cannot do so without attacking others. For now I will leave the comments open, but if people can't handle being mature about this, then I will start to screen them. I anticipate results that will show that we are much more diverse group of people than many may realize. I enjoy that Harry Potter can unite people from different backgrounds and beliefs.

So, thank you in advance for not starting drama.

[Poll #471475]

Destiny//Gryffindor Prefect

ETA: If anyone selects other for an answer, it would be really cool if you wanted to specify what your actual answer would be had I included it in the poll. Of course, because this is intended to offer anonymity if you so choose, I completely understand if you don't want to. Just thought that it could be a chance to learn something new. :)

I'm still pretty unfamiliar with it myself, (and quite possibly mispelled it ^.^), but from what I understand it's based on the idea of unifying religious beliefs?

I'll see if I can find a web link.

Heh nice idea!

So far, I'm the only muslim and the only person living in Asia. Well, I think it's Asia. Saudi Arabia is Asia or Africa? *ponders* Normally, it's Middle East, but I think it's still Asia. Oh great, this is going to bug me now until I find out.

Hee, and so far, we also only have one boy!

You can stop looking shifty as another guy has filled out the poll.
On a side note: I was highly tempted to click other for that (though I thinking I'm wishing I had) because although I'm a chick, I don't identify with other females. I grew up as a tomboy wanting to be just like my older brother, am generally more interested in "boy things", and actually think more like a guy does (can't help how my brain is wired!).

Oh, and we're glasses twins.

Catholicism is actually a branch of Christian.
You have Catholics and Protestants, which encompasses all the other denominations running around.

I'm female, bisexual, atheist, Canadian, and confused about what I would put for "class". :-) Growing up, I felt like I had everything until I was about sixteen. Our own house, dogs, televisions, VCRs, a computer, two vehicles - and everything was *ours* not the bank's or the credit card's. But the truth is that for a lot of that time, we were barely above the poverty line. My dad is *very* good with managing money and finding ways to get the things he wanted. When I was little and he had a good job, he saved like heck and managed to pay everything off before he lost it.

So I've felt upper middle class for most of my life. My parents tell me I'm insane. :-)

[identity profile] tangerinesidhe.livejournal.com on April 9th, 2005 10:26 pm (UTC)
That's actually interesting... I hadn't really thought about how perceived class might play into such things. I think that this is also a newer issue: a lot of families live above their means.

I thought about including a question on race... but then I thought of the US census and what a mess *that* is. So many people have such varied racial/ethnic backgrounds.

But I too love that we have a community where things like age and race don't matter. Not only doesn't matter, but it's one of the few chances you get to interact with such a diverse group of people, since in many life situations it doesn't happen.
[identity profile] aoyana.livejournal.com on April 9th, 2005 11:24 pm (UTC)
I was hesitant about putting christian as my religion for a moment, and just thought I'd specify (in case some people place other) that I am Catholic... because of a head of church it often is put seperate from Christian, so just in case :) Lovely idea, btw

-Megan, Gryfffindor
[identity profile] tangerinesidhe.livejournal.com on April 9th, 2005 11:34 pm (UTC)
Well, there are distinctions in all of the religions. Even within Protestant branches of Christianity there are some that differ pretty wildly.

I had considered listing them separately, but I thought that it was better not to get too deep into specifics--it would make the poll a gazillion bubbles long. :)

Because I think it would help...
I clicked that I have a Middle Class SEC background. But there is a HUGE difference even between Upper and Lower Middle Class families. Lower Middle Class families (such as mine) tend to have a stronger work ethic.
That is how I grew up; however, as I am on my own now, I would put myself at the line between working and lower middle class. I'm currently working my way through Grad School, so I rely on roommates to help me afford apartments in the city I live in.

i put "other" for my religion question. my dad is protestant and i think my mom was/is catholic. but while i believe in god and celebrate holidays like christmas, i have no idea how those religions are different from any other ones (as in the christian faith. i think it's christian right? i know next to nothing about religion). plus, i've never read about it or anything

If you'd like a quick explanation of the theological and historical differences between Catholicism and the Protestant denominations, e-mail or IM me (contact info is in my user info). I'm not an expert on religion, but I can give you a pretty good break down. Also, the Protestant Reformation is a big chunk of the years I'm specializing in for my history major. ^^

Sorry to spam your inbox with so many responses, but after replying to someone else's comment, I decided to change an answer of mine.
I'm the lone "Other" for gender since you said which we identify with. Yes, I'm a chick, but I identify more with guys. I get along better with guys (I generally think most chicks are absolutely insane...just like that quote from Dogma). I grew up as a tomboy emulating my brother. Every test I've taken that supposedly tells you what gender your brain is always goes extremely towards the male persuasion. My brain is wired to think like a guy...except when it comes to crushes...I definitely crush on guys.
[identity profile] tangerinesidhe.livejournal.com on April 10th, 2005 12:46 am (UTC)
That's totally cool. :)

Part of my wording was a natural response from having had a number of transgendered friends. I don't think that just asking someone what their "sex" is works anymore.

Female, 20, North America, I'll put "other" for sexual orientation (and explain below), Wiccan or Pagan, Middle Class, and Slytherin.

Hello, my name is Ally, I'm 20, a neo-Pagan from Bible-belt Oklahoma, and I'm an "other" under sexual orientation. See, I thoroughly enjoy the opposite gender. But, I am attracted to females. Does that make me bisexual? I don't think, but I wanted to make sure. Anyway. I identify with the other gender, because I have eighteen million guy friends. No, seriously. Well. Maybe just eighteen. Girls are just too *snarl-claw-hairpull* for me. Too much drama (although I do like to hang out with my girlfriends... the whole 2-3 I have). With guys, you can belch, make other disgusting interesting body noises/such and not be "Like omg ew!" with it.

And.... I'm spent.

Female, 17, bisexual, agnostic, and definitely "working class" at the very least from the good old USA.

Woot for the poll, it was very interesting to see people's responses. It surprised me quite a bit that there are only TWO males here, and that there are so many people who don't identify themselves as "Heterosexual".

Very cool.
