Colors
I've been wondering about something. Do you associate certain colors with certain characters? In general, in their clothing, their eyes etc. If it is not mentioned in canon, where do you think those associations come from?

I've noticed that in many fics Draco's eyes are described as grey, but I am rather certain that it's not mentioned in canon. Lots of people seem to like to dress up Harry in green since it fits his eyes. Snape is usually seen in black clothing or very dark green if he's feeling very Slytherinish. Dumbledore, on the other hand, wears bright clothing - I doubt anyone would expect to see him in all-black and if they did, they'd most likely ask who's dead.

Actually, canon!Draco's eyes are grey -- they're described as being similar to Lucius', which we know are grey. But to me, grey is a slightly strange color to have for eyes - I think of the grey being just that pale of a blue. As far as Harry's coloring goes, I tend to clothe him in either dark green for his eyes or deep Gryffindor red. His dark hair, for me, makes those colors particularly striking for him, though it's not necessarily canon.

Also, I think it's rather interesting that McGonagall, the Head of Gryffindor House, wears a ton of emerald green in the novels. Just a strange note...

As for Snape, his black robes are really a matter of practicality to me, in a sense: black wouldn't show potion stains as readily as other colors would. The color I associate most with Dumbledore is a deep purple, for some reason. I think it's due to AD's status as Headmaster and purple being somewhat of a royal color (not that AD's king of Hogwarts, but you get the idea).

In which book is that mentioned? I can't remember seeing pure grey eyes, as most I've seen have had blue in them. What I remember from reading about eye colors in some teen mag many many years before, grey was supposed to be the sign of a somewhat cold person, green passionate, brown warm and blue of course naïve. That way, I feel it fits the Malfoys; I can't really see them with blue eyes. Unless it is very very light, almost colorless.

That eye-colour interpertation is interesting. I wouldnt put too much stake in it, but interesting none-the-less.

I'm not sure if it's mentioned in PS/SS about Draco, but here's the description of Lucius from CoS with implied references to Draco:

"He[Lucius] had the same pale, pointed face and identical cold, gray eyes." (CS4)

I don't have my books with me at the moment, or I'd look it up for you. =/

Well, I don't really see Snape as someone who would enjoy bright colors, plus dark robes are good for hiding in shadows. I imagine that might be useful for him sometimes. Good point about the potions stains, though... although all lighter stuff shows clearly in black, starting from dust etc. So best color would probably be a randomly patterned one.

Grey eyes aren't that weird; I have grey eyes with a hint of blue.

I definitely agree with you on the colors though. And you're not alone in seeing Dumbledore in purple. The connotations of that color just suit him well: the royalty bit, calm, dignified, etc

Blue-gray is common, I've seen lots of people with eyes like that, but not with pure grey eyes.

The lexicon says Draco's eyes are "Gray and cold (like Lucius'). "
I suspect it must have been said in the books SOMEWHERE (dont worry, im confusing fandom with canon lately too. WAY too much fanfiction *cough*).

I accociate white/gold with draco (probably because of his hair) which I find interesting since light is often accociated with 'good' and dark with 'evil'.
... mind you, I'm also convinced that Draco is good. He didnt kill Dumbledore, he couldn't do it. No matter how much his father told him 'who he was' he couldnt throw away this 'human' feeling he had.
So maybe my 'light' interpertation of him is apropriate?

Purple
Dumbledore is always purple to me. He wore purple robes somewhere in the first book and its just stuck.
Hermione. A lavender purple.
Green
Minerva is green. I dont know if thats from the book or because she wears a green dress in the movies but I cant see her has the customary Gryffindor red.
Ron. I dont know why. He has Blue eyes.
Blue
The weasley twins are blue to me.
Pink
Ginny. Its interesting how Fleur points out that she'll look horrible in Pink in book 6, but I still accociate that colour with her.
Yellow
Lee Jordan. I have no idea. lol
black
Snape. Obviously.
Harry. His hair? I dont know. Its not like he has a paticularly 'dark' character, but I still see 'back' when I think of him.

I knew a boy in highschool who interperted everything in colours. He heard a word such as "Tuesday" and he would tell you its "Orange" (I'll never forget that tuesday is the colour orange). Personally I see pictures and then I see colours.

Ginny - smiling girl in pigtails. then I get the impression that she has pink ribbons in her hair and is wearing a pink dress
Twins - two boys laughing together. then I feel they are each wearing a blue sweatshirt (yes, sweatshirt. not tshirt or anything else).

So have I thoroughly made a fool of myself? lol.
Yes I think this entire concept of colours and images (some people have tastes, even!) to be very interesting indeed.

Hmm. It must be somewhere after Lucius is introduced. I really should read the books again... it's been a while. Although I can't read OotP again because of Umbridge.

Hmm... that is interesting. On the alignment scale I always see Draco as lightish grey - he's a minor annoyance, not evil. His hair makes me think of white, though; something alongside Lucius' hair in the movies, although not quite. I really don't like bleached blond yellow, so I was horrified that Draco's hair was like that in the movies.

Purple is also a royal color, as was pointed out before. And he really is like the king of Hogwarts castle.

Ron as green? That is odd. All the Weasleys give me red/orange feeling, very obviously because of the hair and them being Gryffindors. Although the twins are a different shade of the others... and well, the shades differ in general. And there is always maroon with Ron. ;)

For me Harry is a mixture of black and green. I have problems accepting that movie!Harry's eyes are blue.

Dude, thats blasphemy! Harrys eyes are GREEN!!!! lol

I think I also accociate purple with intelligence - hence Hermione.

I see Lucius as Grey, though draco deffinatly NOT grey. And just for arguments sake: I loved Draco's hair in the movies!

Harry will ALWAYS been green for me, both for his eyes and because it's a very healing color. If anyone needs healing, it's Harry. Ron is orangey-red, because of his temper. (Who didn't see that coming?) Hermion, strangely, I tend to think of in warm earth tones, sienna and khaki. She's such a motherly figure in a lot of ways. Remus is the same, but his browns are more dusty and care-worn, if that makes any sense...

Sirius did an interesting flop for me. I used to think of him as a vibrant blue, one of those indigo colors so rich you feel like it might jump off the page. Now he's warm blue-gray, and that came about solely due to eye color. I used to think he had blue eyes, and then JKR announced that he has gray, and I made the Malfoy-Black connection. Draco is related to Sirius through Narcissa, which means in a way he might have the Black family eyes, rather than the Malfoy family eyes. Strange, but after that Sirius' colors tended to be warm muted blues. On the flip side, I tend to identify Draco with very modern, almost industrial colors. Hard grays and matte blacks, dull blues, slick greens... They seem to fit his personality for most of the books. Lately they seem to be turning towards the darker side too, and maybe a bit more blue and a shinier black. He's become such a 3D character since book 6, but not in a way that bodes for happy endings.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention the temper. I wonder why red is seen as the color of temper? Is it because of fire, or because of the traits associated with redheads or what? Or just angry flush or something? Hmm. I find colors very interesting, as can be seen... so it's funny that I only wear black.

I see Sirius as black with blue-grey, more blue, though. Not soft baby blue or even icy blue, but a deeper and darker shade. And I guess the black has a tinge of dark ble as well.

I think that grey clothing would fit Draco well - not only because of his colorization, but because of his personality, too. Either lighter and darker grey, or possibly black or white with it.

Temper = passion = red
I see Sirius as shades of black, white, and grey. I dont see any colour for him.
And I'm hiding it really hard to see draco as Grey. I dont know why, its so close to white; but nope, he's gold/white.

I too see Remus as brown. Always have. A light powder-brown.

My friend's eyes are actually sort of grey. They are freaky, kinda transparent. They give a person somewhat of an evil look. Like they're hollow or something. I like them though, they're appealing in a way.

I love Lucius' eyes but I think Draco's would have a darker shade of grey. I associate deep blues, greens, gold and silver with the Malfoy family.

Black is an elegant colour and also "dark" and sometimes "evil". I think Snape wears it because it hides a lot of things. I mean, Snape's a Death Eater, a spy so I guess it's better for him to wear darker colours. But I think he would wear grey too. Those two colours really have no life in them, get me? They're solid, not cheerful so it's quite right for him to wear black.

Anyway, here's what I think.

Yellow - Neville, Flitwick, Twins, Hagrid.
Blue - Percy, Dumbledore, Hermione.
Orange - Other Weasleys, Tonks, Fleur.
Red - Voldemort (dunno why), Sirius, Remus.
Green - Harry, McGonagall.
Black - Snape, Bellatrix, Voldemort.
Grey - Lucius, Draco, Voldemort (he's a lot of colours ;D).

Of course, those are just a few examples. :)

Pure grey, no blue or green or brown? Sounds very interesting! You don't happen to have a good photo of them, do you? (you can out out their face if they don't want it online, naturally)

Why do you think that Draco's would be darker? Is is because of the feeling you mentioned of getting of the light-colored eyes?

I've actually been wondering about the Death Eater thing. Someone somewhere suggested that the black might be also because he doesn't have time to change to Death Eater robes when being called, but I don't know... aren't the Death Eater robes supposed to be easily distinguishable? In that case I can't really see it.

Dark grey perhaps, but I can't imagine him in light grey. At least robe-wise - a shirt or other wear under it would work. Dark grey would work in robes, too. Then again, I am mirroring this based on my own tastes as a person who only wears black; the only grey I wear is in socks, but dark grey is somewhat acceptable.

I always view Neville of brownish green, probably because I associate him with Herbology. I also can't get rid of the association Tonks = pink.

Voldemort - red because of his eyes? I see him as black - red - sickly pale, although I also associate green with him.

As for Bellatrix - I view her as blueish black, like Sirius, although she is more black.

Now I'm getting disturbing images of Voldemort in "a lot of colours". *points at the Snape pic* Reminds me of the winning house contest drabble a while back, too... was it by Lux? There was lots of pink in any case.

My very first thought upon reading this post was something that’s already been mentioned, and that’s all the Weasleys being red/orange to me.

And a few other characters I can think of at the moment:

Neville Longbottom – Earth tones (Because of his excellence in Herbology)
Fleur Delacour – Blue (The light blue Beauxbatons robes and her eyes are blue as well)
Peter Pettigrew – Grey (A grey rat named Scabbers)
Hannah Abbott – Yellow (A Hufflepuff yes, but I feel there’s something else there too)
Gilderoy Lockhart – Gold (True his favourite colour is lilac, but I associate him with a more golden colour because of his hair and the fact that he tries to have a big winning personality)

I see Gilderoy as gold with some other bright colors mixed in. (they may change as they wish) Sparkly.

I see Lockhart in more purple than gold though because of the royalty connotation. Since Lockhart thinks so highly of himself, I'm sure he sees himself as similar to royalty.

I think I'm a bit odd when it comes to this question. For some reason, I always linked the color blue to Harry, like a brilliant sapphire blue. The Weasleys are strickly various shades of orange, the twins are neon orange where Percy is like a yellow-orange. There is only two Gryffindors I associate with and that would be McGonagall and Hermione. I also do not associate green with the Slytherin characters. Bellatrix is red to me, because of intensity and sadism. Snape is black but also a deep mud-brown, merely because he always reminded me of a monk of some sort. The Malfoys, I'd hate to see in green because they would look way too much like Tolkien-esque elves. I always associate them with white and ice blues, because they're like ice embodied. The only character I do associate with green is Hagrid, like a deep hunter green because he is so nature-oriented. He reminds me a lot of the Horned God in Celtic mythology. Neville is yellow, a color associated with cowardice (which he is not a coward) but also means innocence and happiness. Remus is amber, where Sirius is black, not because of his last name but because of things like black leather jackets and motor-cycles. Dumbledore is periwinkle, because it seems to fit him and for some reason, when I see the color combination of yellow and pink, I think of Rita Skeeter.

So, my two cents.

Perivinkle is a color? Also, intersting thought about the Horned God.

Your colors aren't ones I'd use, but I can see where you are coming from. Very interesting choices, I think they work well.

About Harry and blue... has it anything to do with healing? At least I associate a certain blue with healing, probably because of Dragonlance.
