Wizarding familiars
I was wondering about wizarding pets. The children are allowed to bring an owl, a cat or a toad to school, although Ron has his "rat" from the first day. What is the purpose of these familiars, other than the owls? Are they just for company? For any animal-related spells, like in transfigurations? Can they be used to strengthen the wizard's power or spells (like familiars in some fantasy can be)?

Also, do you think that the kids have other pets either at Hogwarts or at home? In many fanfics some students take another kind of pet later on, for example Harry a snake. Do you think that it would be allowed? Would exceptions be made for students who can actually converse with the animals, like Parselmouths or other similar cases? (These would naturally not be common, as the speakers are not common)

What about teachers? Do they have familiars and what kind? There's Fawkes, of course, and Hagrid has his pets, but the others. Are there restrictions on what kind of familiars/pets can be kept in the castle? (no student-eaters?)

Heh heh.... no student-eaters...

I, personally, would hope to bring Lupin, my cockatiel, along with me. However, I'd give her some kind of shield charm before bringing her to Hogwarts, as she isn't a magical creature and would have no defense against other magical creatures.

Which brings me to wonder... what would the teachers do if one student's pet hurt another student's pet? There could be mass chaos! Hmmmm...

You named your cockatiel Lupin? lol thats cute.

I dont think they'll do anything. Notice in book 3 nothing was done with scabbers was being 'attacked' by crookshanks. Unless he didnt report his friends' pets' actions... But I cant see them doing too much other than patting you on the back and saying 'next time get a pet that doesnt bate another animal'. Though I imagine dangerious pets arent allowed to begin with.

I don't think they can do much besides telling people to watch after their pets more. If there's a psycho pet going arounbd attacking everything, it would probably be asked to be removed from Hogwarts, though.

What is the purpose of familiars (other than owls)?

Well, Hermione's cat is actually a kneazle...which is good at spotting evil and the such (why he kept chasing Ron's rat/Peter around)

I always wondered, too, why Ron got to bring a rat. Why does it explicitly say cat, toad, owl, but ron brings something entirely different? Does he get specail privelege being a pure blood family (and thus being more familiar with the wizarding world before being shipped off to school)?

I always imagine Snape with a few big ass boa constrictors in the back of his class (or maybe some sort of magical equivilance). Just cause thats what the "science" teachers always had, and I imagine Snape as being the Magic Science teacher. Maybe Im just nuts.

I always wonder the rules about bring different animals too, just because every Mary Sue has a different one. Hmmm...

Okay, its too early to make my brain go in coherent thoughts, so Ill leave it at that

I cant see Snape having a pet. He's just not the type to show affection for anything - including an animal - or at least not on a long-term basis.

And I think the fact that Ron braught a rat shows how 'low class' he is. Why would a wizard have a rat. I'm sure that school is infested with rats as it is.

[identity profile] boley.livejournal.com on November 5th, 2006 07:55 pm (UTC)
hahaha, yeah, i guess the whole "rons so poor he has a rat" could just be a ploy to reinforce the point that hes kinda poor. Its not even a first hand rat either, its a hand-me-down rat. And the fact that its a major plot point...haha.

I guess I didnt really think of Snape having a snake as a "pet" per say, I just always imagined them slytering around in the back of the room. (in cages). You dont really have to show a whole lot of affection to give an animal some food at the end of the day.

But you have to take care of them if they're in cages. I cant see snape doing that.

I've seen a fic where there was a ghost cat that lived in his quarters and he set out some milke for it every once-in-a-while, even though the cat just pretended to drink it - of course the cat was a ghost so it didnt actually drink. Snape viewed the appartement as belonging to the cat since she was there before he was.

Personally I think thats as close as it gets to snape having a pet. I suppose if he had a creature that randomly roamed the dungeons and slept in his quarters - one that he payed no attention to, never fed, and didn't even have a name for - might also qualify as a suficient pet for the potions master.

I can, if their use outweighs the trouble. Fresh potions ingredients, prepared by himself, and all that.

I think that I have read that fic. And I agree about a roaming pet. I think that he's like me in that he views taking care of a pet too much trouble.

Hm thats a good point. If it wasnt a 'pet' so much as 'ample potion ingredient that needs feeding' than I can see it. Though I dont think he'd keep it in his quarters, then.

And it was a snarry fic. Thats all I remember. I read so many that they just kind of blur into one....

[identity profile] delfeus.livejournal.com on November 6th, 2006 04:17 pm (UTC)
Well, it depends. He couldn't keep it in the classroom, at least...

I know. I can't remember much else of it, either... the mention just brought forth a clear image of a scene like that. :)

It's also not one of the allowed pets... see what happened when he brought in a pet that (strictly speaking) wasn't allowed!

I think he could have one that was useful for potions, though. Perhaps a snake, if he had use for snake skin? Or something like that. If it has a use, then...

Well, the rat was a hand-me-down, was he not? So...technically, I guess he just assumed that since his brother had him, then he'd be okay with taking it to school as well. Even so, I never quite understood how rats were "magical" or suited as wizarding pets. Cats, owls, and toads all make sense, but rats...

Also, Ron wasn't the only one who had an unlisted pet. Didn't Lee Jordan have a tarantula? I can see that as a fitting wizarding pet, but it's not on the "allowed" list, either.

Hmm...as for pets at home, I can always see Draco Malfoy with some really big breed of dog. I also agree with the above about Snape and a big boa constrictor. ;)

And I totally agree with your Draco comment. lol

Aren't witches supposed to have toads? In stories etc.

Yes, but why.
I cant see their magical properties. I'm quite certain they have some, I'm just ignorant to it.

Some have poison or something in their skin and by licking it you can see hallocinations... that's the story at least. So, perhaps that's why?

I would so lick that toad.
Maybe thats where the fairytail ends for the frogprince? He was just a toad the princess kissed then tripped balls off of. lol

The rules seem to be (in terms of owls and cats) 'an inteligent animal that doesn't cause harm, can survive on its own, yet is loyal'. I know this might offend doglovers, but thats the difference between a cat and a dog: dogs dont fit this chriteria, and they're far more dangerous.

I have no idea why a toad is allowed. Maybe its a smplistic hampster-type creature but is popular enogh to make mention of? Or perhpas they have some kind of hidden 'channel' or 'gateway' to power?

Oh, something else that just came to mind that I might as well take note of: why would a Witch want a rat/mouse/hampster/farret/rodent. They dont seem to be overly clean people, these animals are pests - or at least live there already to some degree. Its like that episode of the Lone Gunman where one of the guys has a pet cocroach. You start to wonder 'why'.

I agree. Plus dogs are a bother, always wanting to be petted, whereas most cats are fine by entertaining themselves. And dogs need to be taken out for walks.

I know some Gryffindors who wouldn't mind a pet ferret they could try to make do funny tricks...

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOGS AND CATS
A dog thinks: Hey, these people I live with feed me, love me, provide me with a nice warm, dry house, pet me, and take good care of me... They must be gods!
A cat thinks: Hey, these people I live with feed me, love me, provide me with a nice warm, dry house, pet me, and take good care of me... I must be a god!

ok the political one was a bit off topic...

Any way, yes I'm sticking by my assessment about why cats are alowed and dogs arent. I just wanted to post these jokes lol

Also, the text definition - that's why I'm a cat and not a dog. ;)

Are you more likely to experiment with halucinagenic herbs?

I actually knew a guy who smoked catnip. He said it hit harsher than anything he'd ever smoked, and that he was too busy coughing to actually noticed if he got anything off the hit or not.

hm...

I'd try it for money. I can be baught, after all :)

maybe its to teach the kids responability while away at school without the parents around to care for the pet if they dont want to.

im quite sure [some of] the kids have other pets at home at least. i think i remember reading something about a wizards pet shop at diagon alley?

why those 3 pets, im not sure. i can see the cat or owl, as owls deliver the post and cats can catch the mice/rats around the castle but a toad doesnt do much. :/
