What are your pet peeves about the HP fandom?

Personally, I grind my teeth at the people who are so concerned about spoilers that they go batshit if anyone even mentions the title of the book. I mean, what are they going to do? Buy the book with their eyes shut so they can't see the front cover?

I'm actually not a big fan of slash. It bothers me when people try to force it down my throat, but the fact that it exists doesn't bother me. I'm not THAT easily annoyed.

Ships. I don't see the point in them *sorry but it's true!*

I partly agree with this. I find it interesting to think about and write about different ships, but I don't go crazy about them or insist that there is any One True Pairing.

I'm not a huge fan of fan fiction either...I dunno why just never got into them

My biggest pet peeve about the HP series are the big spoilers. The little one's aren't so bad, but the one's that tell you the end or something like that suck.

Hah yeah. There are definitely two extremes with spoilers!

Yep yep yep! I hate how people are going around making fake books to fool us and they probably want us to get mad, which is actually sick on their part, but it's still angering even if it is fake.

My biggest pet peeve is when people act like they "own" a character. Sure, I've been in "I claim Ron" battles, but it was all in good fun. I hate how people act like, NO YOU CAN'T LIKE HARRY BECAUSE HARRY WAS MINE FIRST as if they really believe it! No, he was JKR's first.

You know what, that's not my biggest pet peeve. My biggest is when the people who've only seen the movies act like they're the biggest fans ever, even when it's so obvious the only reading they've done is wikipedia.

I second that.

(P.S.) I own Ron, JKR is delusional.

I hate people who spoil without warnings. The title of the book is all I need to know, thanks. If I know something about a book, I wait for it the whole time I'm reading, and it completely changes the expirence. I love HP so much that I want the best expirence possible, and especially since this is the the LAST CHANCE I am ever going to have in my entire life to expirence it.

I am currently furious that someone has spoiled me about what will be in the epilogue. And here, no less! I think it's utterly disrespectful to post things like that without spoiler warnings. I have never been spoiled in any HiH community before, as everyone has always used cuts or just not said it, so I'm very sad. :-(

I should probably also mention that I do my part to avoid spoilers. I don't read any HP newsite. I don't go to JKR's site. I don't watch interviews with her. I don't click any cut tag about it. If a post even suggests it might contain a spoiler, even without a cut, I don't read any of it. If a Superstore accidently sells a copy in advance, I plug my ears whenever the news mentions it. If the book comes out at midnight on the 21, I get offline by noon on the 20 and don't go back on until I'm finished the book.

So, frankly, the only spoilers I fall prey to are the ones released by inconsiderate people. I don't mind spoilers existing, and I don't really think my stance is extreme, considering I am the one doing the work to avoid them.

I AGREE. ): I don't read interviews feat. JKR precisely for this reason.

My biggest pet peeves must be the house pushing. :/ I don't mind ships (I love hp slash) and I ignore people who claim their shipping is THE BEST AND TRUEST EVAR!1, I don't like spoilers, either, but I'm going to make SURE to not be anywhere near a computer then.

So yeah, that leaves the house pushing. Why someone would want to be in Slytherin if they obviously do not belong in Slytherin (Oh, yes, Draco IS sexy) will always remain a secret to me. Srsly, buy yourself a badge and proclaim yourself Slytherin by all means, but don't expect others to stamp you as a Slytherin or as a Ravenclaw or whatever.

[identity profile] blondeweasley.livejournal.com on June 23rd, 2007 11:35 pm (UTC)
I agree. Some people get so upset when they aren't in the same house as their favorite character. Okay, so I can see why you may want to be in the same house as Draco, because who wouldn't want to see him in all of your classes, but some people don't seem to realize that they won't actually get to see Draco.

So I guess that means my pet peeve is the people who don't realize HP is fictional. I've actually had arguments with people who insist that a random building on google maps is Hogwarts...it kind of hurts me inside when I realize that they're completely serious.

O_o; I love HP, I do. It's actually quite pathetic, really, but I don't mind, heh. Thankfully I still can distinguish between reality and fiction ...
I can definitely see how that can hurt!!

I got accused of pushing when I don't even LIKE most of the Slytherin characters Y___Y Thankfully I like the house HERE at HiH. I think if I was in a bigger house, I would have been less likely to participate so much...so it worked out. Anyway, I ramble, but my point is that while there ARE a lot of people who push [the same ones who don't answer quiz results as honestly as they can], some people look like they're pushing but they're really not.

Jake//Slytherin
[identity profile] caketime.livejournal.com on June 24th, 2007 12:57 am (UTC)
Yeah, I agree that it's hard to sort the pushers from the obvious ones that should obviously be in one particular house. But sometimes the pushing's so blatantly obvious it hurts. And I wonder what makes people do that.

Mia/Claw
[identity profile] mihakken.livejournal.com on June 24th, 2007 01:07 am (UTC)
I wonder about that, too. When I vote in stamping/rating communities, I sometimes just -stare-...because it's a whole lot easier to see when someone is pushing for a specific character than a specific house in HP, I think. Like everyone is an artist who likes explosions when they want to be Deidara of Naruto. XD

I'm torn, because on one hand, I'm kind of horrified at the people who are so completely crazy about their ship that they have to write essay-length arguments for it and insist that anyone who doesn't see the truth is bad and wrong and stupid and can't read.

On the other hand, they are pretty hilarious.

I read a lot of fic and I've seen some pretty crazy things.

But recently, the worst is the spoilers and how people [and some communities] are going to great lengths [like avoiding lj for weeks before the release and after.] to not get the book spoiled in any way.

spoilers don't bother me, so I just find it strange. :x

Crazy shippers are my biggest pet peeve about the books. The ones who piss and moan when their ships are sunk or whine about the ships that sailed. If you don't like what happened in canon, go write fanfic but quit complaining to all of fandom, no one cares! :P

I actually do not read HP fanficions, even though I read them for my other fandoms. HP is such a worldwide phenonmena that everyone comes up with their own theories and ships, it pollutes my mind with all the things that never happens, and stray my mind from the real story. For me, fanfictions are only for fans to muck around with AFTER the author are done with the story!
