Social Post ~ The Four Elements

Every day we warm ourselves by Fire,

Wash ourselves in Water,

Feel the Wind in our hair,

Walk upon the Earth.

As recently as only a few thousand years ago, many Western scientists believed that the whole of the earth was made of four elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

Earth represents practicality, stability, materialism, realism.

Air represents intellect, reason, human communication, social relationships.

Fire represents passion, energy, impulse, enthusiasm, inspiration, idealism, faith.

Water represents emotion, mysticism, intuition.

Keeping these elements in mind, how do you think they relate to the Potterverse? To the houses of Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin? How do they relate to HiH?

Discuss to your hearts content, but be on the lookout for what might come next. For if you are brave enough to face the obstacles ahead of you and successfully complete all four, you will be admitted to the Order of the Wand.

(Which is in no way official here at HiH, it’s me and my twisted imagination that is plotting.)

Well, Rowling has said that Gryffindor can be associated with fire, Slytherin water, Hufflepuff earth, and Ravenclaw air. She may have even created the houses with those elements in mind, and personally I can't think of anything that would fit better.

Well, hey, I matched them up per J.K., then! (See next comment - I posted it bfore I saw yours.) Woo-hoo! :D

On the surface, I would equate the elements with the following Houses:

Earth represents practicality, stability, materialism, realism: closest to Hufflepuff

Air represents intellect, reason, human communication, social relationships: Ravenclaw

Fire represents passion, energy, impulse, enthusiasm, inspiration, idealism, faith: Gryffindor

Water represents emotion, mysticism, intuition: Slytherin

That being said, like most things in this world - both the Harry Potter universe and the real one, things are rarely cut and dried. Pieces of each house appear in each element. This is a fascinating concept, though.

I think it'd be a bit hard to assign a particular element to one individual house as all four houses can show characteristics of each. It did make me wonder though. In astrology, you have earth, water, air, and fire signs and I was wondering if we did a poll, if there was predominately earth, fire, etc. in each house we have at HiH. My sister and I are both fire signs and we were both sorted into Slytherin.

I do however think [livejournal.com profile] jacedesbff has it right about which element most suits each house :D

That would be really interesting to discuss!

I'm a water sign, by both the Chinese and Western Zodiacs (Water Monkey and Cancer) and I do have my fair dose of snakiness, although I am a pretty clear Ravenclaw. However, I consider Slytherin to be my secondary house.

Mind you, I am not a huge believer in astrology, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Haha, I actually don't put much faith in it either. I like to think people are who they are. It isn't predestined or anything. But it is interesting to read horoscopes, just to see what craziness someone can come up with ;)

I agree with what everyone else has said - Gryffindor is Firey, Ravenclaw represents Air, Slytherin connects with Water (though less than the others connect) and Earth is perfect for Hufflepuff.

Personally I do feel that I fit with both Air and Ravenclaw, just really naturally - since I was little I've liked the Air element more.

Ooh, I love discussions like these.

Hmm. Well, the first thing that jumped to mind is my own house. I see Ravenclaw as a house associated with air. (No surprise that was intended.) Ravenclaw is the "intelligent" house, and air is connected with that. Reason works, as well. I'm not sure how well human communication fits; personally, I see Ravenclaw as the house of the mad scientists (I'm thinking someone like Walter from Fringe here). I think they're the ones who would lock themselves away with some new puzzle and let their life fall by the wayside. But that's maybe a whole different discussion! Anyway, there is canon support for that point. Cho Chang was a popular girl who got along with most of the other students. Flitwick was head of Ravenclaw and he seemed very personable (from what we saw of him, anyway).

Fire is so very Gryffindor, I think. The passion's there, for one thing. And impulse. Yeah, and the idealism. Wow, I was all prepared to defend this, but I don't think that's even necessary. I feel this is supported very strongly by canon.

Earth I would definitely agree is Hufflepuff. First the materialism and realism aspect - Slyth is the ambitious house, of course, but I see Puff as a house that shares that a bit. While a lion is more likely to have lofty goals but no way to attain them, I think Puffs worry about being housed and well-fed (practical concerns, so another match-up there) and while maybe their goals aren't as high as a snake's, they usually know how they're going to achieve them.

And Snakes. Water is all that's left, obviously, but I'm not quite sure how I feel matching Slytherin with water (since it's not my house, I'm very interested to see what the snakes think). Emotion? Well, yes, I can see that. If they're in a position like the Malfoys, being very emotionally aware can help hide their true feelings. And obviously snakes care very deeply for their family and close circle of friends. Intuition? I'm trying to think of canon examples here... Snape! He had strong intuition for potions making, obviously. And yes! Yes, snakes are often able to read social cues and act accordingly. They're usually very good networkers, after all. Okay, yeah, I've just convinced myself. Slytherin is the water house.

If you can't tell, I love thinking about the house traits. I'm an air/water (well, we'll say that - I'm a huge skeptic, so that's just for fun with me), but often I'm sorted into Hufflepuff. I could go on... but I'm new and don't want to be all rambley my first go round. XP
